You can see the hungry monster coming, but by then it might be too late. It has the potential to strike at any time as you’re going about your day, but the worst is when it gets you in a middle of a workout.
The last time the hungry monster really got me was right before teaching my Monday Pilates class. I had spent the day at the beach with the kids, eaten well and felt fine on the drive back with just an iced soy latte as my afternoon snack.
As I was plugging in my iPod and rolling out my yoga mat, it hit. Full on hunger and nothing to sustain me. It’s highly unusual for me to not have any snack on me and I actually did have a Vega Sport Energy Bar on me, but I had left it in the car with no time to run out and grab it. What a tease! I powered through the class, but it would’ve been just the perfect thing to hold me through right then.
I was super excited when I received a box of Vega Sport Energy Bars to try out, not just because I love bars as a healthy, easy-to-grab snack, but because of the flavor they sent. You pretty much can’t beat chocolate coconut almond.
I look for bars with the most natural ingredients and these fit the bill. I love that they are made with organic ingredients, are non-GMO and made with less refined sugars like agave nectar syrup and coconut palm sugar. They’re also vegan and gluten-free, for those with dietary restrictions.
They taste great and give me the fuel I need to power me through a workout–or just the rest of the afternoon! I take them with me to the gym when I’m doing a longer workout or pack them in the diaper bag with the kids snacks so we all have something to prevent the hungry monster from ruining our day.
The only con I have is that there are added sugars, even if they are natural ones. The total grams of sugar is not any more than other bars out there, but it’d be nice if the sweetness only came from the dates. The use of agave syrup is also a bit of a con for me, because of its high fructose content.
