The Foods I Keep Out of My House

Here’s a little “What I Don’t Eat Wednesday” of sorts of you. 🙂

We all have a food we can’t control ourselves around. If it’s in your home, you’ll eat it. This is why my #1 tip to people looking to live a healthier lifestyle is to keep the junk out of your house.

Now, this may not keep you from chowing down on french fries while you’re out, but if you’re making healthy choices most of the time, an occasional side of french fries isn’t going to matter much for your waistline or your overall health.

Whether you crave sweet or salty, we all have our weaknesses. These are mine.

1. Goldfish Crackers

That first tingle of salt as it melts on my tongue backed by cheesy goodness is why I can’t have these around. I crave that salty tingle as I place them salty-side down, one-at-a-time in my mouth and keep going back for more. We bought them for a little while when Reece was a toddler, but it’s been a long time since I’ve had them around because I just cannot.stop.eating.

2. Terra Chips

I can eat a whole bag in one sitting. Yes, I’ve done it before. I can make the excuse that they’re made from veggies, so they’re “healthy,” but nothing with that much fat in that large a quantity is healthy.

3. Ice Cream

Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia Ice Cream

Now, I do buy ice cream on occasion, but if we have it in the house, I’m eating it every night. I treat myself to a pint of Ben & Jerry’s now and again because that lasts me two nights and then it’s gone. And no, I don’t run back to the store the next day to replenish my supply!

4. Cookies

Nestle Tollhouse chocolate chip cookies

Not just any cookie, homemade ones. This is part of the reason why I don’t bake very often, because if it’s here, I’ll eat it. If we do make cookies, I give as many away as possible to neighbors so that I just have a few to enjoy.

5. Peanut Butter Filled Pretzels

Who knows what a serving size is on these things, all I know is that I definitely don’t stick to it!

6. Honorable mention goes to Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

I somehow manage to limit myself to a serving size with these, but my husband does not. He tells me not to buy them every time I do, but yet I keep them around anyway because I enjoy them for dessert. These are the perfect short and stout size to deliver just the right ratio of peanut butter to dark chocolate. Once you start buying these, Reese’s PB Cups will never do it for you again.

What are the foods you need to keep out of your house OR what are the ones that you know you should, but still keep them around anyway?

And yes, some of these images are linked to Amazon just in case some of you can actually control yourself around them. 🙂

  • I’m pretty good about controlling my snacking and I don’t go after all the kid snacks in the house. But ice cream is my weakness! I’ve discovered it’s best if I just buy the tiny little single serving ice creams (they even make Ben and Jerry’s itty bitty sizes!) so I can still get my fix, and limit buying the pints to every once in a while.

    • Automatic portion control! Those little sizes are perfect–I should try that more often. Now that it’s summer, I’m saving my ice cream intake for trips out with the family.

  • If I buy black bean chips the bag is gone in an hour…its kinda gross how quick I eat them! They only make an appearance in my house when I know someone else will be home to stop me from devouring them, haha!

    • This is my problem when it comes to Terrra chips. I LOVE them, but my husband doesn’t, so I end up eating the whole bag on my own.

  • Tortilla chips. It’s just so much easier to not have them in the house. Yum and [sigh]!

  • I have only seen these foods in grocery stores. My house has never seen such disgusting snacks LOL! Okay, they’re only disgusting HEALTH WISE – eating wise, OHHH they are so good! Those Goldfish, AHHHHHH LOVE LOVE! I used to love the PIZZA flavored ones, but sadly… I cannot eat them! In fact, I have so many food intolerances and allergies that I cannot eat pretty much ANYTHING – but you know what? I am okay with that – all I can eat is HEALTHY! My health issues are a blessing in disguise! 😉

  • m&ms. my husband and daughter love to share them for daddy/daughter time, but if they sit in the freezer too long-they are as good as mine!

  • Ice cream gets consumed quickly! I also like to keep baked yummies out of the house, it’s hard to stop at just one cookie!

    • Yes, and while I like to enjoy a cookie every now and then, I don’t want to be having one (or two!) everyday.

  • Thanks for a fun post! I can have food in and not eat it, but I’ll buy far too much. I have a treasure chest of chocolates, cookies, sweets…but I don’t eat it all, just need to know that I have them. Although that being said my weakness is English biscuits (cookies) that dip deliciously into a warm cup of tea!!!

    • I completely understand the need for something to go with your tea, as I always have a cookie with my afternoon coffee–I just tend to lean towards Greek and Italian cookies rather than English. 🙂

  • What a good post. I try to keep any type of cheese logs (especially goat cheese) – I love them so much!

    • Now that’s one I haven’t heard before, although I do love cheese. Do you eat it on crackers or just with a spoon??

  • I can totally understand the Terra chips! I have eaten a whole bag by myself before. I keep checking the label to make sure there really is 6 oz in a bag (there’s no way, right?!). Warm, homemade chocolate chips cookies with gooey chocolate chips are like crack for me, too!

  • I love your blog and approach to food 🙂 I am definitely the same way – if it’s in the house, I have absolutely zero self control. We’re staying with my in laws temporarily (long house buying/remodeling story), but it’s been very difficult to stick to my normally healthy lifestyle because they just keep all sorts of tasty but horribly unhealthy snacks in the house at all times. I’m going back to 100% paleo as that seems to be the only way I can overcome my cravings, but it’s really hard when my son sees them eating those foods and is curious to try, but hubby and I don’t allow him to eat fries, chips, or sugary foods. Anyhow, lovely post 🙂
